Proving Einstein Right: First Confirmation of General Relativity Theory on Cosmic Scales
Testing Einstein’s Theory
Doc Reina Reyes and collaborators “tested Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity to see if it holds true at cosmic scales. And, after two years of analyzing astronomical data, they concluded that Einstein’s theory, which describes the interplay between gravity, space and time, works as well in vast distances as in more local regions of space.” Results of the pioneering study, titled “Confirmation of general relativity on large scales from weak lensing and galaxy velocities” were published in the prestigious Nature journal in March 2010.
International News Coverage
The breakthrough confirmation of Einstein’s theory of gravity on cosmic scales was announced by Princeton University and covered widely in the press, including in Nature, National Geographic, NBC News, Space.com, among others. It is also featured in “Putting Relativity to the Test” on PBS Nova:
“For years tests of GR on truly cosmic scales—as opposed to those of planets or our solar system—were inconclusive. Astrophysicist Reinabelle Reyes, a doctoral candidate at Princeton, and her team changed that in 2010.”
Pinoy Pride and Science Advocacy
Her contribution to this groundbreaking work gave Doc Reina the moniker “The Filipina Who Proved Einstein Right”, from the Rappler feature and interview by Nikka Santos, published in March 2012:
“Einstein’s theories have been verified many times, but it took Reyes and her Princeton University collaborators to verify his Theory of General Relativity, beyond the confines of our solar system.”

Leading through Partnerships in Astronomy Research, Community Building, and Outreach
As a leading figure in astronomy in the Philippines, Doc Reina is committed to nurturing the growth of a vibrant and inclusive community across the country. She holds leadership roles at the Space Science Missions Bureau of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Astrophysics Research Group of the Research Center for Theoretical Physics (RCTP). She also serves as Adviser for the Philippine Society of Space and Astronomy Research (PSSAR) and the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space in the Philippines (SEDS PH), Co-Chair of the Research Expertise Cluster on Space Science of the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE), Regular Member of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Division of Earth and Space Sciences, and Individual Member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
By forging strategic partnerships, Doc Reina played a key role in the establishment of no less than three pivotal conferences and workshops for astronomy and space science in the country— (1) Philippine Space Science and Astronomy Research Conference (PSSARC), organized by PSSAR, (2) Jagna Space Encounters (JSE), organized by RCTP and (3) International Conference on Particles, Astronomy, and Radiation (ICPAR), organized by the Samahang Pisika ng Visayas at Mindanao (SPVM).
With these collective efforts, the tribe is growing and the future is bright for astronomy and space science in the Philippines!

Spotlighting Pinoy Scientists, one post at a time.
Back in 2012, Doc Reina started Pinoy Scientists as a single-serve Tumblr blog. Since then, it has grown into an influential social media platform that gives voice to brilliant scientists from the Philippines—with over 97,000 followers and growing! Join the movement and get a daily dose of inspiration from their featured scientist of the week, every week. Follow PS on Facebook and Instagram and subscribe on Substack.
in partnership with WeSolve Foundation, PS also leads the Pinoy Scientists Coalition, organizing scientists and allies to advocate for a research environment where they can flourish and do their best work to advance science, improve lives, and build a better Philippines.
